شطرنج یک بازی دونفره است که بر روی صفحهٔ ۸×۸ شطرنج و با استفاده از مهره‌های شطرنج (شاه، وزیر، رخ، فیل، اسب و سرباز) انجام می‌گیرد. هر یک از مهره‌های شطرنج به شکل مخصوصی حرکت کرده و قادر به زدن مهره‌های حریف نیز هستند. هدف این بازی شه‌مات کردن حریف است یعنی ایجاد وضعیتی که شاه حریف هیچ راهی برای فرار نداشته باشد. همچنین بازی در صورت تسلیم اختیاری یکی از بازیکنان نیز با پایان می‌رسد، این اتفاق معمولاً وقتی می‌افتد که شکست اجتناب‌پذیر به نظر برسد. بازی شطرنج همچنین در چندین حالت نیز ممکن است با تساوی ختم شود. بازی شطرنج به سه بخش شروع بازی یا گشایش، وسط بازی و پایان بازی تقسیم می‌شود که در هر یک از این مراحل تاکتیک‌ها و سبک‌های متفاوتی به کار بسته می‌شوند. مهره‌های شطرنج دارای ارزش متفاوتی هستند و با نمادهای ویژه‌ای نوشته می‌شوند. شطرنج دارای تاکتیک‌هایی از جمله چنگال و آچمز و دارای جنبش‌ها و حرکات ویژه‌ای مانند حرکت قلعه، آن‌پاسان و ترفیع پیاده است.
